Embark on my 14-year journey from a fulfilling career in law enforcement to travel, exploring scuba diving destinations, culminating in retirement in tranquil St. Croix, USVI. Follow my steps and learn how to transition from a high-stress career to travel and finally to island life.

Charting a New Path: Scuba Diving, travel and retirement planning the journey ahead

After dedicating over two decades to law enforcement, I’m plotting a new course: a 14-year transition involving extensive travel before finally settling down in the serene environment of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. So, this blog is my travel journal and guide for shifting from a life of service to exploration and eventual resettlement. Join me as I share the adventures, the preparations, and the insights from my scuba diving and travel through retirement.

The Allure of the Ocean and scuba diving

The ocean promises adventure and a profound connection with nature. Because of that, here’s what I’m looking forward to:

• Peace and Serenity: The ocean is my therapy, offering peace that the bustling city never could.
• Wildlife Encounters: From swimming with dolphins and sharks to observing marine life in its natural habitat, every day promises a new discovery.
• Conservation Efforts: Participating in marine conservation projects allows me to give back to the environment that gives so much to us.

The Road Ahead to Retirement: What’s Next on My Journey

Transitioning through this extensive period allows for different life experiences and thorough retirement preparation. Because I have a lot of time, here is how I plan to navigate these metamorphic years:

2025-2028: Preparing for Retirement and Planning Travel

1. Understanding St. Croix: Researching everything from property laws and healthcare to cost of living and local culture.
2. Income Streams: Establishing reliable business ventures that align with my new lifestyle.
3. Financial Security: Reviewing my retirement plans, ensuring I have a robust financial strategy to maintain a comfortable lifestyle, including potential rental income, enhancing savings, downsizing possessions, and planning detailed itineraries.
4. Short Trips: Starting with shorter trips to various destinations for scuba diving, adjusting to life on the water while maintaining professional responsibilities. I have been to St. Croix several times and absolutely love diving there. My favorite shore dive location EVER is the pier in Frederiksted, St. Croix. 2029-2031: Extended Travel and Dive Explorations

1. Longer Stays: Spending weeks at a time in key locations that interest me, from the vineyards of France to the reefs in Australia.
2. Cultural Immersion: Engaging deeply with local cultures, learning languages, and participating in community activities.
3. Networking: Building relationships with locals and expats and connecting with real estate agents and expat groups online.

2032-2034: Deep Dives, Travel, and Decisions

1. Focused Travel: Returning to places that captured my heart for extended periods, possibly volunteering or taking on local work.
2. Skill Development: Enhancing my nautical skills and earning more diving certifications to fully embrace and engage with my oceanic environment.
3. Narrowing Down: Beginning to consider which experiences and locations could influence my decision on where in St. Croix to settle permanently.

2035-2038: Retirement Transitioning Towards St. Croix

1. Solidifying the Decision: Frequent visits to St. Croix, purchasing property, and upgrading the home.
2. Gradual Move: Slowly moving belongings to St. Croix, setting up the home, and spending more time on the island each year.
3. Sustainable Living: Implementing sustainable practices to minimize my ecological footprint and contribute positively to marine ecosystems.

2039: Retirement and Official Relocation

1. Full-Time Resident: Completing the move to St. Croix, also fully immersing myself in the island lifestyle, and officially retiring from all professional obligations.
2. Community Integration: Actively participating in local activities while establishing a new daily routine and enjoying the fruits of my years of travel.

The Benefits of an Extended Retirement Transition: This journey offers numerous advantages outside of travel and scuba diving:

• Personal Growth: Each destination teaches resilience, happiness, community integration, and the importance of taking the time to adjust psychologically to major life changes.
• Financial Stability: Building a robust financial cushion to enjoy this new phase will minimize monetary stress.
• Flexibility: Extensive time allows for adjusting travel plans based on experiences and discoveries.
• Skill Confidence: Gaining confidence in my abilities through education and practice, ensuring safety and enjoyment when I finally set sail.
• Preparation for Retirement: Gradual adjustment to a slower pace of life ensures a smooth retirement transition.

Challenges Along the Way: A journey of this length isn’t without challenges. A journey of this length isn’t without challenges. Furthermore, logistical complexities exist, as do healthcare management across countries and maintaining relationships. Because of this, strategic planning and staying flexible will be key to managing these issues.

Navigating Challenges: This lifestyle change from law enforcement comes with its own set of waves to ride. In addition, loneliness can creep in, and the unpredictability of nature can be daunting. Staying connected digitally and joining like-minded communities will help smooth the transition.
